I am flying to Dallas in a short while to attend my denomination’s annual meeting. Leaving my family for any stretch of time seems to be getting harder. If I am truly honest the reason it is so hard is that when I am not around I have to really trust God to care for them. I realize the inconsistency. I have to trust God to care for my family at all times. But when I am not even in the same city as they are it becomes especially clear that I am powerless. It becomes clear that I need to trust someone who is more powerful (and wise, loving, etc.) than I am to protect me and my family. I need a God who is sovereign. Who rules over not just my life but the lives of the people I love as well.
Q. What are God’s works of providence?
A. God’s works of providence are, his most holy, wise, and powerful preserving and governing all his creatures, and all their actions.
Westminster Shorter Catechism, Question 1
God, the great Creator of all things, doth uphold, direct dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by his most wise and holy providence, according to his infallible foreknowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of his own will, to the praise of the glory of his wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy.
Westminster Confession of Faith 5.1
