It took Kate a long while to come up with a title to her blog. Mine came rather quickly, but that doesn’t mean that it might not get changed at some point. So why “Peace and Prosperity?” One of the objectives of this blog is to help us (but truthfully mostly me) think theologically about life and ministry in Miami. In about a month and a half we will be moving to downtown Miami with the hopes of planting a PCA church there in the next 1-2 years. The goal of that church, along with several others that will hopefully be planted in and around the city of Miami in the years to come, is to seek the spiritual, cultural, and social renewal of Miami. Or in other words: to seek the peace and the prosperity of Miami.
These words come from Jeremiah 29:7. In that passage Jeremiah is speaking to the exiles after they have been carried off to Babylon. Many false prophets were saying that the Lord would send them back soon and so they should just circle the wagons and wait for God to get them out of that awful place. But the Lord actually wanted his people to do the exact opposite.
Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.
There are those who still say that we need to circle the wagons and wait for God to get us out of this mess. I think the Lord still wants his people to have this view towards the places they live. What does it mean to seek the peace and prosperity of Miami? This blog will hopefully begin to answer that question for us all.
